Context

Level Infrastructure was the lead engineering consultant on the Michael Sorkin Studio competition team for the Xiong’an Urban Framework Competition. Xiong’an New District in Hebei Province is a significant new district prioritized by Chinese President Xi Jingping, meant to build upon the successes of the related Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and Shanghai Pudong New Area. Building on years of previous planning work by many multi-lateral and national agencies, the team synthesized issues of drainage, landscape, public transit, food, renewable energy, and many more, into a fascinating vision for Xiong’an.

Our Role

Level Infrastructure contributed planning and design of citywide sustainable strategies for drinking water, wastewater, transportation, food, electricity, and solid waste. Level worked collaboratively with Michael Sorkin Studio to ensure that infrastructure planning constraints informed the sustainable growth plans for all component cities, and that the cities would be self-sufficient across all infrastructure sectors. Level’s involvement pushed the development to be energy self-sufficient, thanks to Level’s concept for a combination of renewable energy generation facilities, including solar and geothermal facilities.
