Context
The Taopu Smart City project is a redevelopment plan for a 1,000-acre former industrial district in Shanghai. Near the S25 ring road and two major subway stations, the project is posed to be a major urban infill development, creating a mix of residential neighborhoods, business districts, and shopping corridors. Such large-scale redevelopments are becoming more common in China as cities grow into industrial districts once on their periphery. In these areas, as is the case in Taopu, given good transit access and an increasingly central location, land value increases and investing in major developments become more attractive.
Our Role
Level Infrastructure provided transportation planning services for the project, with a focus on designing a walkable, pedestrian friendly transportation network. The safety and comfort of pedestrians was the primary principle used to drive the overall neighborhood design. Street trees, on-street parking, retail facing the street, and reduced street widths all contribute to a comfortable experience for pedestrians.. Level collaborated with RePlace Urban Studio and Ennead to design an optimally dimensioned street grid, featuring comparatively small block-to-block distances and reduced street widths, in order to provide sufficient vehicular circulation while also creating a walkable neighborhood.
