Context
Vipingo City was a master plan for a new city located on the Kenyan Coast, 45 kilometers north of Mombasa. The 10,000-acre site is currently occupied by expanses of green sisal fields, but in 30 years, Vipingo City will be Kenya’s first completely walkable city, with 12 distinctive neighborhoods, a thriving economy, reliable infrastructure, a variety of housing types, public parks, healthy food systems, quality schools, and functioning ecological systems. Vipingo will be the model for how cities provide modern infrastructure in affordable ways so that businesses and families can thrive.
Our Role
In collaboration with RePlace Urban Studio and Athena, Level Infrastructure created an integrated infrastructure plan for the new city that included a comprehensive mobility plan, sustainable energy plan, water supply, wastewater treatment, recycled water networks, stormwater management, and solid waste management plans. Finding synergies between the inputs and outputs of each system, Level Infrastructure was able to develop a sustainable model for urbanization in the African context. Following production of the master plan, we provided technical support during Phase 1 of the detailed design, as an engineering peer reviewer for roadways and utilities network designs.
